Homage Prince No.2 - Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori in Joseph’s Coat of Many Colors American abolitionist, Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori, was born a prince in west Africa where he commanded a large army. The army was ambushed by enemies and  he was sold into the hells of the transatlantic slave trade. Decades later Prince, as he was named due to his demeanor, was granted freedom with the help of an Irish adventurer who, previously shipwrecked off the coast of west Africa, taught the young Prince English. Decades later they ran into each other coincidentally  in a small town market in Mississippi and petitioned the U.S. government for his freedom. Once freed  Prince temporary moved to Philadelphia where he wrote with abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Prince exemplifies the tremendous strength, and power of the human spirit. His story, parallels that of Joseph in the Old Testament. The coat of many colors ties in with much of my work depicting a colorful pallet together with the rest  of the painting’s imagary as in the series Containerships, Charleston  Mosquito Fleet and Path of Colors series. Homage Prince No.2 - Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori has been selected for  2023 Piccolo Spoleto juried exhibition best of 2022 at Charleston’s  City Gallery March 17 through May 9.
